October 11, 2009 It was a big game this past week as Blaine took on rival Squalicum. Both defenses were tough against the run Friday night making yards on the ground difficult to come by and forcing both to the air.Blaine's balanced offense was on display as Jordan McCarty 20 of 31 for 230 yards went to work artfully distributing the ball to several receivers led by Trevor Chau's 5 catches for 95 yards while Todd Bird and Al Bohnson combined on 11 catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Squalicum seemed determined to stop Blaine's Caleb Statham from breaking the long run stacking 9 defenders in the box most of the game. That strategy combined with one of the biggest lines in the NWC and a talented linebacker core held Statham to a workmanlike 98 yards and one touchdown. Defensive End Tusapa Laolagi led Blaine's stifling defense as they held Squalicum to less than one net yard on the ground while their hard hitting caused 4 turnovers, three fumbles and an interception. This win puts Blaine in the driver's seat to secure the second seed in the NWC and sets up a big game next week between Blaine 4-2 and Burlington 5-1 whose only loss was to Squalicum.
